Multiculturalism in Children’s Literature
“Multicultural” has multiple meanings when it comes to children’s literature. Ezra is considered a pioneer of multicultural books, as the author of stories about black and Hispanic children. The word is used, as well, to characterize books with non-white characters and subjects by non-white authors and illustrators. It also describes books that appreciate difference, racial or otherwise. Each of these definitions addresses the need for inclusion in society, and that’s why we embrace them all as we explore the subject in this section. Expect a growing library of materials that attest to the importance of recognizing and respecting all our children.
