It was a joyous occasion for the crowd of kids and families at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco on March 2. The children were excited to receive their awards for the Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Competition and to see all the books on display. This year the winning books were also on view March 15-23 at the Asian Art Museum’s city-wide student exhibition, the SFUSD Arts Festival.

, Executive Director of the Contemporary Jewish Museum, summed it up:

I am thrilled to share the success of Sunday’s [Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Competition] Awards Ceremony.
…We hosted a full house of public school students and their families at this celebration, with almost 300 people in attendance. The competition, a partnership between The CJM, San Francisco Unified School District, San Francisco Public Library, and the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, immerses students in the art and craft of original bookmaking, and is dedicated to infusing literacy and art into the public school curriculum.
…Students of all ages from all over the city submitted books, addressing topics as diverse as sea turtles, the Ohlone tribe, racism in America, and dealing with a grandmother’s death.
…The ceremony showcased all the books, and honored the winners with medals, certificates, and prizes. The participating children and their families, many of whom were first time visitors, were thrilled. One school even brought a busload of 40!
…I left this event truly inspired, and hope to see this project and important partnership continue well into the future.
