ABOUT THE EZRA JACK KEATS FOUNDATION:

1. What does the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation do?

The EJK Foundation oversees the continuing publication of Ezra’s books, making sure that the quality of the production meets the high standard required by Ezra. The Foundation is responsible for administering any business connected with the books, such as film adaptations, posters, books based on Ezra’s characters or new formats (coloring books, etc.) Film companies wishing to make documentaries about Ezra’s life, work with the Foundation, as do companies wishing to make electronic games or toys centered on Ezra’s stories and characters. The Foundation evaluates proposals for the funding of programs that are then administered by the institutions that have received the funds. We answer the letters still written to Ezra every day by educators, parents and children. This is one of our favorite jobs.

2. How was the EJK Foundation started?

Ezra created his Foundation before he died, but during his life it remained a largely dormant organization. It was upon his death that the true work of the Foundation began. Nurtured by the royalties from his books and by the people, who loved Ezra, the Foundation has grown into a glowing reflection of Ezra’s desire to contribute to making the world a better place for children.

The Collection and the Keats Archives are dedicated to preserving and promoting the vitally important field of children’s books created over the last several centuries.
