5. What is the goal of and inspiration behind the Ezra Jack Keats Book Awards?

The EJK/NYPL Book Awards were created to celebrate the new illustrators and authors who have been able to combine great artistry with the courage and drive to create outstanding picture books for children of many races and ethnic backgrounds. The EJK New Writer and New Illustrator Awards remain unique among children’s book awards because they encourage and reward excellence in children’s books; they encourage and reward new artists so that they can continue their work; and they encourage and reward publishers for striving to create books that, as did Ezra’s, reflect the diverse faces of children across this country, and around the world.

6. Can I ask by librarian or local bookstore for books, which have won the EJK Book Award?

We hope you will ask at your local library and bookstore for EJK Book Award winning books. You can help us send a message to these institutions that parents and educators want to have picture books that expose children to great art and inspire them to reach beyond their grasp.
